Harmony Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion – Phase 1

The master planned community of Harmony is built on 11,000 acres of open, natural space and is currently home to more than 1,000 residents. In support of the growing community, Wharton-Smith served as construction manager for a new .5 MGD (expandable to 1.5 MGD) Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) designed and built to allow for future expansion of the unincorporated development.

The project includes influent screening, flow EQ tanks, flow splitter with gates, two 56’ concrete clarifiers with internal 38’ ring tank with secondary clarifier and aeration EQ pumps, RAS, WAS and scum pump stations. Also included are three process blowers, two disk filters, two chlorine contact chambers with an effluent pump station, chemical storage and feed building, aerated sludge holding tank, site improvements and a new administration/electrical building.

The site for the new WWTP plant was donated to the community of Harmony and is part of the surrounding wetlands. Extensive site preparation was required to de-water the site and prepare it for construction. A de-watering pump was used on a continuous basis to keep the site dry. Upon completion, the site was raised anywhere from 2-5 feet in order to mitigate any excessive flooding.

The water that is treated in this plant is intended to be used for irrigation which will eliminate several of the existing shallow aquifer irrigation wells.
