Our internship program has helped Wharton-Smith become a teaching organization where talent, formal education, and the real world of construction come together, and everyone benefits. Some of our most successful senior managers started as a summer intern.
The civil engineering and construction management interns spend time in the office, the field, and when possible, preconstruction services (estimating). Over the years, we have expanded our program to include accounting interns, human resources interns, and most recently, information technology interns.
The Wharton-Smith Internship Program is designed to offer hands-on experience with real-world construction challenges. It’s a chance to be part of something tangible, to feel the satisfaction of building, and to discover a genuine passion for the construction industry. Our Internship Program has long been a meaningful part of the company’s success, serving as a launchpad for many of our leaders today.
Interns will have the chance to gain experience across a range of construction management activities, including but not limited to:
- Visit or work at an active construction site
- Collaborate with seasoned professionals
- Reviewing submittals
- Drafting RFIs
- Learning basic survey techniques
- Updating As-Builts
By the end of the program, the goal is for each Intern to walk away with a strong understanding of both the construction industry and Wharton-Smith’s role within it—empowering them to make confident, informed decisions about their future career path.
At Wharton-Smith, we believe our interns are worth the investment because our leaders of tomorrow will emerge from our interns today.
