Don Burns joined Wharton-Smith in April 2008 in the field as a Foreman. He then joined the Safety Department and is now the Regional Safety Manager for the Carolinas Region. He has more than 25 years working in Safety Management. Don is responsible for safety training and inspections at all Wharton-Smith’s jobsites in the Carolinas. He maintains safety and health records for the region, conducts accident and incident investigation, handles the required training and evaluation, and plans programs to achieve those objectives and integrate safety into the culture of the organization. He also establishes Emergency Response for the jobsites including organizing, training, and coordinating skilled employees, as well as manages security aspects, such as identifying and implementing design features and procedures to protect facilities and businesses from threats that introduce hazards. Prior to joining Wharton-Smith, Don worked in manufacturing and construction safety. In addition to his professional experience, Don graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s in Education. He also holds many board certifications (BCSP Board of Certified Safety Professionals), and the following are just a few to name: Certified Stormwater Inspector, Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Construction Health, Safety Management Specialist (SMS), and CHST OSHA 10- and 30-Hour Trainer. Don currently lives with his wife and has three children and two grandchildren.
