Wharton-Smith provided Construction Management services for the construction of a Modular Fire Training Unit consisting of a Class A training tower with an approximate size of 8,000 SF. The structure was constructed of 31 shipping containers that were custom fabricated to meet the customer’s training needs. The tower is 6 stories tall and is 40 feet by 40 feet at its base. Each interior room is specified as either a “burn room” or “smoke room”, and each has its unique obstacles and features to simulate various training scenarios.

The project scope also included site improvements to approximately 5 acres of land that was previously used for ground-level training with vehicle props. Site improvements included new stormwater management, asphalt paving/curbing, future handicapped parking, and new sidewalks. The project was competitively bid resulting in a tight budget. The project team carefully managed the project to keep it within budget while providing a high-quality product to the City of North Port.
