Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter’s Women Build program empowers women to make a difference by helping build homes, communities, and better futures for local families. Their motto is “We’d rather build it than clean it!” See more pictures.

Wharton-Smith donated funds for a home in Eustis, Florida for a single mother of three. A group of nine ladies from Wharton-Smith assisted with fundraising over $3,900 and volunteered their time on August 12 to put the first coat of paint on the house’s exterior.

“The Habitat Superintendent started us out with a safety meeting, ensuring we had the protective equipment we needed and reminded everyone that safety comes first on the jobsite,” said Denise Hatton, Wharton-Smith Project Assistant. “Then he handed out paint, brushes, and rollers and showed us how to prep and paint the exterior.”

The first-time homeowner has worked hard to make this dream possible for her children. “She is thankful to the Wharton-Smith team and all the other teams who poured their hearts and support into building her forever home,” said Geria Forrest, Community Outreach Coordinator for Habitat Lake-Sumter.

Special thanks to Habitat for sending the Kona Ice truck by on a hot day!

The faith-based Habitat has a tradition – each new homeowner receives a symbolic brass skeleton key and a Bible. The Wharton-Smith team was given the opportunity to sign the flyleaf of the Bible and offer congratulations and hope for a bright future.
