Punta Gorda, FL – The Airport Rescue Fire Fighting Training Simulator Facility (ARFF) project in Charlotte County, built by Wharton-Smith, Inc., located on the existing Public Safety campus in Punta Gorda received an Award of Merit, Specialty Construction by the Engineering News-Record on August 8.

The submission outlined the complexities of constructing a multipurpose live fire training simulator designed to represent a modern narrow-bodied aircraft. It also delved into the teamwork between the architect, Wilder Architecture, the engineering firm, Anston-Greenlees, Inc., the aircraft manufacturer Alpine Metal Tech, and Wharton-Smith. The aircraft mock-up is approximately 95′ long with two wings and five engines and offers training on how to fight various aircraft fires. It will supply the County with a revenue stream as firefighters from other counties utilize the ARFF and stay in the area during training.

Construction quality was monitored closely to deliver a high-quality product to Charlotte County.
