On September 22, Wharton-Smith team members came together with representatives from St. Lucie Public Schools to mark the grand opening of the SLPS North County Complex Fuel Island. St. Lucie Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jon R. Prince kicked things off by thanking all of the school bus drivers in attendance for the incredible job they do every day, saying, “You are critical to us, to our student’s experience, and I can’t tell you how appreciative I am.” See pics here and video here.
The $1.2 million project included responsibility for the design, demolishing the previous fueling station, and rebuilding from the ground up. A new 45,000-pound tank, which holds 15,000 gallons of diesel and 5,000 gallons of unleaded, was installed, as well as three pumps, fuel lines, and a metal canopy structure. Upgrades were also done to the existing maintenance buildings on site.
“This project was supposed to take a year, and we finished in just under six months from design to construction,” said Project Manager Donald Williams. “It was challenging but rewarding to see all the smiles on the bus drivers and staff’s faces. We learned firsthand that their job is not easy!”
This fueling station will serve over 90 bus drivers for the school district.
Congratulations to the Project Team for completing this critical project for St. Lucie County Public Schools!
