It was a celebration like no other at McInnis Elementary School in Deleon Springs, Florida, on November 3. Members of the Wharton-Smith Central Florida Water team joined Volusia County Leaders and other elected officials to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Deleon Springs Utilities Extension. See pictures here.

The newly completed project brings water from the City of Deland to Deleon Springs, which will be life-changing for residents and businesses in the area who, up until now, had relied on wells and septic tanks.

Administrators at the school say they will go from having their well water tested daily to not having to worry anymore. Leading up to the celebration, students learned about the importance of water and what it will mean to the community; they even helped decorate the room for the water-themed celebration. Students also decorated the walkway with faucet cutouts and waved blue oversized hands to attendees as they arrived to celebrate the new water streaming into the school.

“Without water and wastewater infrastructure, you can see what happened to us. We’ve just been in this perpetual state of decay,” said Amy Munizzi, President of the Deleon Springs Community Association. “There aren’t words to explain what this means to this community.”

“At Wharton-Smith, we build infrastructure for growing communities,” said Senior Preconstruction Services Manager Bill Marshall. “Seeing the positive impact on the children of McInnis Elementary and the communities of Deleon Springs, Volusia County, and Deland is why we do this work. Our future leaders are in those classrooms, and moments like these are priceless.”

Congratulations to the project team!
