On January 19, representatives from Wharton-Smith, Volusia County, Schenkel Shultz, MWL Architects, and the public joined in celebrating the ribbon cutting of the new Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office. See photos and video.
The state-of-the-art 20,000-square-foot facility features a drive-thru, temperature-controlled sally port, ergonomic autopsy stations, and an isolated autopsy room for cases with contagious diseases. It will allow the Medical Examiner’s Office to achieve National Association of Medical Examiners (N.A.M.E) accreditation.
The $18.4 million project also includes a private family bereavement space, teaching autopsy stations for law enforcement, universities, and other medical professionals, and a designated room for tissue recovery with 24/7 access to local organizations for viable tissue donations.
“I’m incredibly happy with the job that Wharton-Smith did,” Volusia County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Fulcher said. “Their efforts here are really spectacular. The communication was flawless, and there was no day during the construction period when I didn’t know what was happening. I would recommend Wharton-Smith for any project you have.”
“I’m so thankful for our Wharton-Smith project team and the architects and engineers who allowed all of this to come together,” said Project Manager Chris Lewis. “What this facility is going to be able to do for the residents of Volusia County now and into the future is going to be tremendous.”
Wharton-Smith President and CEO Tim Smith congratulated the team for their dedication and tireless work throughout this project. “You should be very proud of what you have accomplished here,” he said. “I know I am, and Volusia County and its residents appreciate your work here as well.”
Congratulations to all who were involved in delivering this incredible new facility.
