On June 20, Wharton-Smith joined St. Johns County to hold a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction on two new community-focused projects: Silverleaf Sportsplex and the Shearwater Community Park and Library. The event was attended by County officials, staff, and members of the Board of County Commissioners. See photos.

These two facilities are part of the County’s $123 million regional park plan and represent a significant step in addressing the growing demand for recreational spaces in the area.

The Silverleaf Sportsplex will feature five synthetic turf multipurpose fields, three natural grass fields, areas for tailgating, ticketing, and food trucks. The Shearwater Community Park and Library will include a recreational field, pickleball and basketball courts, a splash pad, two playgrounds, and space for programs and services supported by the St. Johns County Public Library System and the Supervisor of Elections.

Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Kane summed up the day by saying, “This is where St. Johns County comes together… whether it’s at their kids’ soccer games, playing pickleball, going to a library, or coming to a community event. This is really about community.”

“We look forward to building a key component of the County’s long-term vision of creating accessible, inclusive green spaces that meet the needs of the growing community,” said Wharton-Smith Assistant Project Manager Connor Kloby.
